About Van Zandt County

Van Zandt County is located in northeastern Texas 50 miles east of Dallas. The town of Canton is the county seat. Van Zandt County was established in 1848 and named for Republic of Texas leader Isaac Van Zandt. The county, like other Texas counties, has seen its share of prosperity and financial struggles. Agriculture especially cotton and cattle, were the primary income sources for residents in Van Zandt County in the early 1900’s. With the establishment of the Oil Refinery and Morton Salt, Van Zandt County has steadily grown over the last 50 years. Agribusiness, oil, tourism, light manufacturing, retail trade, and salt production continue to be the mainspring of revenue for the county. The city of Canton is also famous for First Monday Trade Days. Canton is the center of activity not only for a thriving county, but also for much of East Texas. First Monday has attracted restaurants, shops and businesses not usually found in other small towns. Van Zandt County is picturesque for the beautifully wooded lightly rolling hills, and a down to earth laid back atmosphere.
