About Smith County
Smith County is located in northeastern Texas fifty-eight miles from the eastern state boundary. The city of Tyler is the largest town in the county and is also the county seat. The County was established in 1846 by the Texas State Legislature and was named for General James Smith who fought for Texas' independence and served during the Indian Wars. Smith County has humble beginnings but has seen rapid growth over the last 100 years. Farming and ranching were the original focus of residents in the county and this has evolved into a very strong agribusiness along with oil production. Hay, roses, and fruit are among the main agricultural products in the county, and oil and gas extraction firms have sprung up all over the county. Presently the oil industry, education, health care, and retail employ the most workers. County tourist attractions include Tyler State Park, several lakes, the Caldwell Children's Zoo, the Goodman Museum in Tyler, the Tyler Museum of Art, and the Hudnall Planetarium. Festivals in the county include the Texas Rose Festival.
