About McLennan County

McLennan County is located in central Texas. McLennan County was created by the Texas Legislature in 1850 out of Milam County, and is named for Neil McLennan, an early settler. The county seat, Waco, is located almost equal distance between Dallas and Austin. McLennan County, like many counties in Texas, has had its share of growth and declination. McLennan County has a colorful history dating back to 11,000 year ago when archeological digs proved that people lived in this area of Texas. Agriculture has played a major role in the county economy as far back as the mid 1800’s, but has gradually decreased over the last 50 years giving way to other industries. Many large employers of professional and related services, including wholesale and retail, finance, education, and real estate have chosen Waco as an excellent location for growing business. Waco is the home of Baylor University which has a strong background in academics and athletics. ALICO Life Insurance maintains its home office in the famous ALICO building in Waco. A tornado struck the city in the 1950’s decimating most of downtown Waco but the ALICO building withstood the ferocity of the tornado and remains a symbol of the resilience of Waco and McLennan County.
