About Hays County
Hays County is located in south central Texas and the city of San Marcos is the county seat. Hays County occupies an area of 693.5 square miles twenty-three miles southwest of Austin. On March 1, 1848, the state legislature formed Hays County from territory formerly part of Travis County. In the early part of this century, Hays County has seen a steady increase in tourism, attracted by caves, springs, and spas of Wimberley and San Marcos. Aquarena Springs and Wonder Cave are particularly well known and have daily visitors as the weather allows. More recently, Hays County caught the attention of environmentalists. Ezell Cave, a watery cavern in San Marcos, is the habitat of several rare animal species, including the Texas blind salamander, and six of the ten known varieties of aquatic cave fauna are found only in this cave and its underground waters. The expanding Austin metropolitan area has created growth for Hays County and is expected to continue as Austin’s economy rebounds from present financial struggles felt throughout Texas and the nation.
