About Ector County

Ector County is in West Texas and the city of Odessa is the county seat. Ector County was named for Mathew D. Ector, a Confederate general and Texas jurist. Ector County is strong in oil, farming, and agriculture. The oil and petrochemical boom started in the 1920’s and has enticed thousands of people to move to the area seeking employment and business opportunity. The discovery of "black gold" has resulted in a continued rise in the county population every year since the 1940’s. Ector County also has several cultural amenities that residents enjoy, including a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theater where a seasonal festival is held, the Odessa College Museum, and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Residents and tourists in the county can also view the second largest crater in the United States, formed when a meteor fell eight miles southwest of Odessa.
